Habitat:  The Chaste Tree is a native of China and India, although long ago it became naturalized throughout the South. 
The early American nurseryman Peter Henderson stated that Vitex has been cultivated here since 1670. For folks in the warmer part of the South, the Lilac Chaste Tree has been the shrub of choice to mimic lilacs, which are restricted to cooler regions.
   
Description: Native to the Mediterranean and western Asia, agnus castus is a deciduous aromatic shrub reaching 3-5 metres in height. It has 5 to 7 lobed, palmate leaves which are cross-wise opposite. The flowers are tubular and occur in shades of violet, blue, pink and white, after the flowers fade they trun into dark peppercorn like fruits.
The Latin name Vitex is derived from the Latin word vieo meaning to weave or to tie up. Athenian women took part in a ceremony which went on for 8 days, this Thesmophori was a fertility festival given to honour the goddess Demeter. 
The women decorated themselves with the flowers of agnus castus and placed the leaves in their beds to help preserve their chastity. 
Medieval monks used the herb to suppress their sexual urges as agnus castus was believed to have anaphrodisiac properties, hence the name Monks Pepper.
