Habitat:   Tagetes erecta, the Mexican marigold, also called Aztec marigold, is a species of the genus Tagetes native to Mexico and Central America. Despite its being native to the Americas, it is often called African marigold.This plant reaches heights of between 50-100 cm (20-39 in).The Aztecs gathered the wild plant as well as cultivating it for medicinal, ceremonial and decorative purposes. It is widely cultivated commercially with many cultivars in use as ornamental plants,and for the cut-flower trade.
Description:  Erect annual herb up to 180 cm tall, glabrous; stem and branches angular to rounded. Leaves opposite in lower part of plant, alternate in upper part, pinnately compound with 9-17 leaflets; leaflets linear to lanceolate, 1-3 cm x 0.5-1.5 cm, acute or acuminate at both ends, margins serrate, bearing scattered oil glands. Inflorescence a solitary terminal head, 5-12 cm in diameter; peduncle 3-12 cm long, apex more or less swollen, hollow; involucre campanulate with 4-10 acute or obtuse lobes each bearing 2 rows of linear glands. Ray flowers female, ligulate, 5-8 in wild types, in cultivars often very numerous, ligule broadly obovate, 1-2.5 cm x 1-2 cm, bright yellow in wild types, lemon-yellow to deep brown-red in cultivated types; disk flowers bisexual, tubular, numerous, 8-10 mm long; stamens 5, anthers united into a tube around the style; ovary inferior, 1-celled, style 2-branched. Fruit an angular achene 7-10 mm long, black, glabrous or finely hispid, with pappus of basally connate scales.
