Habitat: Restharrow is to be found in dry meadows and pastures, by fields and waysides, but also in peat areas and sand dunes. It favours sunny locations with weak loamy or chalky soils. Fertilizing causes it to disappear. The plant is rich in calcium and potassium and fixes nitrogen, which is why it helps improve the quality of poor sandy soils. It also improves the microclimate and moisture content of the soil. It is native to Europe, Asia Minor and the coast of North Africa and can be found up to a height of 1500 m.
Description: Dwarf shrub 10-80 cm; stems erect, irregularly hairy, usually, and often exceedingly, spiny. Leaves mostly 3 foliolate; leaflets very varied in shape, 6-10 mm, sometimes less. Bracts usually 1 foliolate. Flowers borne singly, rarely in pairs, at each node, in lax racemes. Calyx glandular-pubescent, and shortly hirsute at the mouth. Corolla 6120 mm, pink or purple, usually much exceeding the calyx. Legume 6-10 mm. Seeds 1 or few, brown or blackish, tuberculate.
